Packing For An African Safari

African Safari

What to take with limited allowances for travel, in vehicles and/or light aircraft and finding hostel South Africa
. The first thing you should do is invest in at soft bag. Your luggage will be squeezed into a limited space in your safari vehicle and a hard suitcases just will not do. Make sure the bag is plain, hardwearing with a sturdy zip.

We are often asked what binoculars to bring on safari we recommend the following: – a power x7 or higher. Look for any of the following: 7×42, 8×42, 10×42, 8×50, 10×50. It is the second number that is critical. Less than 30 and image quality is seriously compromised. Higher than 50 and you will have a hard job holding them steady. If you can afford Zeiss, Leica or Swarovski, all the better, but Canon, Nikon and Opticron do very good reasonably priced glasses.

[Recommendations for Binocular: – Magnification: 8 x 42 – Field of View: At least 330 ft at 1000 yards. – Exit pupil size: 5.25 mm or more Eye relief: 18 or more – Prism and Coating: BAK-4 prism and Fully Multi-Coated surfaces, Weight: Not more than 30.1 oz. Lbs]

MAKE A PLAN AND STICK TO IT! creating a list – like an architect planning a building, so must you plan the contents of your suitcase. Set aside the pieces you intend to bring and ensure that they are clean and ready to be packed

Jewellery – don’t take what you don’t want to lose, and leave behind the flashy pieces that could attract thieves. Keep makeup to a minimum to save space, and leave the perfume behind when scented lotions will work just as well. When it comes to toiletries – travel kits are always the answer. Having a travel kit perpetually stocked in a waterproof case will save in packing time before the trip and aggravation [and mess] after arrival.

A Kenyan I know is an expert packer – he will spend time packing using every space possible in you soft bag. He ensures everything is clean and ironed. Once folded he irons them flat – sometimes rolling but if they are ironed and folded correctly rolling is not always necessary.

Clothing To Pack for a Safari:

2 pairs khaki cotton pants (jeans are hot and uncomfortable)

2 pairs sturdy shorts

2 long sleeved light coloured shirts (for evenings help to keep the mosquitoes at bay).

1 light sweater or sweatshirt

1 lightweight, waterproof windbreaker

1 or 2 pair sturdy walking or hiking boots or running shoes [thick soles are essential as when walking in the bush there will many long sharp thorns]

3-5 short-sleeved shirts or T-shirts

5 changes underwear and socks

1 hat with a brim (baseball caps might cover your nose but not your ears and neck).

Please travel light. You should also bring a day pack to carry any essentials you might need whilst on safari. On safari most people wear shorts and a T-shirt during the day and put on long sleeved shirts and long pants in the evening for warmth as well as protection from mosquitoes.

Khaki, brown, olive and beige colours are best for and safaris and game walks.
White is not a suitable colour for these activities; they will get dirty with red/brown dust within minutes.

Fleece or sweater and a windbreaker for game drives, because it is highly possible that you may go out on a hot day, but be faced with a chill evening on your return. Some areas have a steep temperature gradient, i.e. Very hot days and very cool nights.
Remember that layering your clothing will keep you warmer than relying on one thick item.

Chinese Visa – Crew, Resident and Journalist Visa

Crew Visa (C)
Persons arriving as crew on international planes, ships or trains and their family members should apply for it.  Clearly they should obtain information and complete formalities via their employers.

Resident Visa (D)
In summary, the regulations state that a person who has lived 5 years in China and is a desirable person may obtain permanent residence status.  In practice it seems that very few people are able to achieve this status. China is not an immigrant country (like the USA, Canada, Australia) and does not seek foreign permanent residents. Unless you have made massive investments which have generated substantial profit to China and you have good connections with the establishment, it seems you are unlikely to succeed.

Journalist Visa (J-1, J-2)
The long stay J1 is for resident journalists, the short stay, J2, is for those who are visiting for short term assignments.  These are rather specialist visas and there are several extra requirements including approvals, invitations from the Chinese media authorities, or itineraries.  There are extra requirements if you want to bring filming equipment into China.  You will find the full details on the application form.

The J-1 is only for 30 days from the date of arrival during which time you and your local organisation must seek a Temporary Residence Permit for the duration of your contract, to a maximum of  5 years.

Basic Requirements
1. A valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months and at least a blank page
2. One accurately and truthfully completed Application Form.
3. One recent passport photo glued on the application form, if the accompanying child on your passport travels with you, the child’s photo is also required, and you should declare to the consular officer.

Additional Requirements for C, D, J Visas
1. For Crew C, a letter of guarantee issued by the foreign transport company, or the invitation letter issued by the relevant units from China is required.
a. Crew members from following 11 airline companies may apply for multiple entry C valid for two years: United Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, American Airlines, UPS, Federal Express, Polar Air Cargo, Evergreen Air Cargo, Kalitta Air Inc., Southern Air Inc. and World Airways Inc.
b. Non-regular scheduled flight, chartered flight, private plane must get the Aviation Permit before departure.

2. For Resident D, applicants should provide original and copy of the Confirmation form for foreigner’s Permanent Residence Status issued by the Ministry of Public Security of the PRC.
Note: D holders are required to apply for the foreigners’ residence permit within 30 days after entry at the exit/entry administration of public security organs under local governments at or above the county level in the proposed place of residence.

3. For J1 or J2, the applicant should go through formalities in accordance with relevant China’s regulations or provisions, and submit the corresponding application documents. For foreign journalists coming for profession-related purposes such as news coverage, interview or reporting, the Visa Notification Letter issued by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of PRC, and official letter signed by the head of the foreign media organization (with details as follows: name list, arrival and departure time, places of interview, content to cover, introduction of the news agency, and name/address/contact number of the news agency) are required. For applications at Chinese embassies or consulates, please contact the Press Section in advance.
Note: J1 holders shall apply for a residence permit within 30 days after entry.

How to Apply
The applicant can submit application in person or ask someone else, travel agency to apply on his/her behalf.

Processing Time
The normal processing time is 4 working days. Extra fees will be charged respectively for rush service (collect on the same day) and express service (collect on the second or third working day after submission).
